EWS-AREVA Scholarship Winner

Eastern Washington Society of Women Engineers (EWS) would like to announce Miranda Raper as the 2014 winner EWS-AREVA Scholarship!  Miranda is a sophomore at Oregon State University planning to major in Biological Engineering.  In addition to her scholastic performance in school and internship in an OSU Johnson lab, Miranda is also involved with collegiate chapters of Society of Women Engineers and American Institute of Chemical Engineers.  Her career goal includes research in drug delivery techniques so she can make a difference in the medical field.  Although each scholarship applicant was deserving, EWS chose Miranda due to her scholastic performance, community contributions, involvement with professional organizations and engineering related activities, and moving essay.  Congratulations Miranda!

MESA Day – April 25th, 2014, 8am-1pm, WSU Tri-Cities

High school and middle school teams will be participating in the Prosthetic Arm Challenge to develop a low-cost device to complete the pre-defined tasks. Please see the attached flyer for more information. To sign up as judge please contact Jorge Moreno.


STEMCon – May 15th, 2014, 9am-2pm, WSU Tri-Cities

Volunteers are needed to help with STEMCon presentations on May 15th. There will be two- 2.5 hour sessions from 9 am - 2pm.

The goal of the session is to help students understand motions and forces by building a model of a suspension bridge and testing the amount of weight it will support. Students will get familiar with different types of bridges (i.e. suspension, arch, girder, truss, cantilever, cable-stayed, moveable, etc.) and will learn how materials can be positioned in specific patterns to form a stronger structure.

JCon15 Planning Committee

SWE-EWS is hosting the 2015 Region J Conference in the Tri-Cities and we are looking for planning committee members.  The committee will have one meeting per month (dinner provided) from January 2014 until the conference in the spring of 2015.  Opportunities are available with various levels of time commitment in areas such as: fundraising, web design, keynote and session speakers, brochure design, career fair, hotel/logistics, technical tours, and registration.  To join the committee, email Dimple Patel.

Region J Leadership Pipeline Mentoring Program

Are you interested in learning more about leadership positions within SWE?  Region J is offering a mentoring pogram within SWE for those who would like to become a SWE leader.  Please contact Susan Young if you are interested.
